Garnet - 4th Non-sketch by Yakra Garnet - 4th Non-sketch by Yakra
Fourth sketch, with which I got overly carried away and is no longer a sketch, for , from the sketch request thingie - Garnet, one of meh own charries. (I really hope you like it! I still feel guilty and non-giftie for making one of my own people. >.< )

Songs really are inspiring, neh? I suddenly got the urge to draw huge firey dancing scenes while listening to the Grandia soundtrack (especially the Ganbo prayer track!) :hmm:

Medium: Pencils (Faber-Castell Polychromos and kiddy ones) on random textured paper
Time: Around 6 days?

Random history to the dance: Up to the north, where the Assam dynasty has ruled for decades, there has always been a tradition of dancing in honour to the fire god, who they believe protects the land. It is said the dance is the key to controlling the sandstorms which bar all entry to the Great Desert - the desert that no living person has ever returned from.

Anyways, amongst the emperor's troupe of dancers there has always been one known as the diviner. Much like the singer priests of Harmonie, he/she dances and through their feet weave out the pattern of what is to come. This time, it was the young Garnet (well.... young for elvern years anyways), who was expected to become one of the greatest diviners the empire had ever seen, being able to sing as well as she danced (she could prohesize through song as well, a talent that was amazing since it was untaught). However, sadly for His Mightiness the Great Emperor of Assam, his daughter dragged this diviner off on her little adventure, and from that she never returned. XD

[Utterly random - there are no elves native to Sayiraka. Hot climate+sand = ickiness for elves!]

I'm obsessed with songs, dances and prophecies, methinks? :O_o:

Criticism? I'm sure I messed up on her body proportions? (feet are too big!)

(Go listen to the Prayer of Ganbo! I order you! XD)

Ha  sounds like you really got into this one :D Can't believe you used the Faber-castell for this >3 makes me think they're a good brand now :XD:

This came out awesome 8D Bloody hell but crap this is awesome! No kiddin' ^^; Colouring is great - the background looks like it'd take the longest, all them people to draw >.>

Meh god... I can't believe I forgot about this comment. I was thinking to myself all this time where I had read that thing about Faber-Castell! XD

I didn't know Faber-Castell was considered a horrid brand? I didn't think it was the best ever, but it is one of the much better one's available here. Infact, I think their pastels, leads and pencils (and even some of their pens) are my favourites? :O That was surprising to hear?

I'd love to know what are considered the best where you are? Copics? Prisma pencils? (Hey! Now I'm very curious! Do you use watercolors? If so, which brand?)

Em... I kind of got bored with the background. ^^; (Except for the three guys to the left! I busy busy thinking up stories about them while making them! XD)

I've seen the faber-castell sold in some supermarkets and thought they were the sort of pencil kids bought to muck around with 8D Not that i've tried them to know ^^ So suprised to hear  so i'll have to try and get a small set to give a go :D

lol, i really don't know how to tell what a prima pencil is XD I keep hearing about them but i have no clue. The pencils i've got a Derwent Studio coloured pencils - they work fine i guess =p >3 And copics are airbrush/texture pens used for manga, right?

For watercolours - i use the Reeves brand (since 1766  )

O__O *fumbles for the right words* waaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!! OMG liek!1 I love the whole mood, lighting and everything, it's almost as if I'm over there in real! Gawsh, the fiery-ness, and the emblem thing under her feet... there so glowy and ... just wow, the sky and moon's looking great too. Garnet is so pretty @_@. Love the activity in the background as well.

Yay! Thank you! ^_^

You know... I wanted it real-er, if that's possible (you know how it's always glossy real type in those cg-ed stuffies). ^^; It's just that... pencils are sketchy (or atleast I can only use them sketchily? :O_o:) soooooo... beh. But I'm glad it seemed firey enough to you (and real! XD).

Eh really? Its like a mix of the kiddy Faber-Castell pencils (you know, the ones in the red boxes?) and the artist quality polychromos ones. I like the kiddy ones because the lead is harder than the artist ones and you can hget some nice details (like sharp outlines). While the artist ones just... blend in gorgeously (actually the kiddy one's do too, but there's a whole range of delicious colors in the artist ones XD).

I would listen to the Prayer song if I could ;_;

I ADORE the strong, vivid colors, it all looks so hot and fiery and gives a festive night-atmosphere :)
Her colorful clothing is also a great detail to the picture <3 (and the feet are NOT too big! o_O)

The pattern in the ground is beautifully done (and technically too, with the skewed angle!) and I love how it looks - does it show a dragon and a bird? Looks kinda like it. I also love the overall idea of divination dancers who dance pictures into the ground

Really?! I was sure I made the feet big - again! I always get told that by others. >.<

Yip that's a bird (phoenix to be exact XD [a very measly one, but a phoenix still!]) and a dragon. I couldn't think of any proper complicated prophecies for her (like - o holy emperor, thou shalt be blessed with another wife tomorrow!) to dance out, soooo.... this is like 'ze great eeeevil dragon of ice shall spread its dastardly wings and devour our precious little phoenix of fire' (and so a certain spiky haired villager shall trot around the world being a hero!). Animals are always easier to draw in such weirdo circles. XD

Aaaaand.... [link] if you're intrested. Its track no. 209 - prayers of ganbo. Ahem... quite obviously I wouldn't own the original soundtrack! :blushes:

I don't think the feet are big at all, especially with Garnet. Her body always looks so elongated and elegant, so even if her feet were long, that wouldn't be off-balance. Just if they were really thick and knobby, but they aren't.

A little proportional guideline that might help: Normally, the feet is as long as your forearm. Meaning, if you're bendable enough to do it, you could set your feet on the inner side of your forearm and the toes would just reach the wrist, I've tried it myself already XD

Haha "Thou shalst be blessed with another wife" that's a good one :XD: I thought it was a phoenix, I just wasn't entirely sure :XD:

aah I completely forgot about that website! :omg: thank you so much for the link! If they hadn't put some albums as registered-only I'd link you to the Song of Prayer of Final Fantasy X, because that's what I first thought of when reading the description.
Anyways, it's a nice song. A little different from what I was expecting but so lively! <3

Oh meh! I never realized that about the foot! XD (I just measured right now!) I used to keep proportion by the head - from all the life sketches I realized the foot is about the same size as the head. This though was quite surprising!! :D

Are some songs registered only on the site? :O_o: I never realized that..? But yip, I've heard the song of prayer from FFX. Somehow that track always pops in my mind when I think of Aimon (or Luc) singing! He he.... It's quite unlike this one! XD

Yeah, when I just checked the Final Fantasy and Chrono albums were all registered-only (it's possible to register though) and quite some other ones too.

Right, the foot is just as high as one's face, right _! I was told this once too and it's just as correct, I just forget about this and always use the arm as guideline (if I use any guideline at all).

I love how the song of Prayer comes in tons of versions sung by different voices! I loved the one by Ifrit the most, it was so lively and strong :)

Soooooooo pretty!!! I am in awe..... ^____^
The outfit is gorgeous...especially the shawl and the translucent look you gave it. ^^
I really like the way the audience fades into the background too...and the colors used on that still add to the warm feeling of the picture. Still, I think my favorite part has to be the magic circle/design bit on the ground. It's almost luminescent and looks as though it's both floating and part of the ground. That, and it's just a really pretty design. ^_^
